Turn on Shopify Return Rules

  • Access your Shopify admin at admin.shopify.com and go to Settings.
  • In the left panel, under the Return Rules section, locate ‘Policies’ and click ‘Turn on’ to make it visible to customers.
  • You can also click ‘Manage’ to modify the Shopify Return Rules.

Adjust Shopify Return Rules’ Details

After selecting ‘Manage’, you’ll see the Default return rules panel, where you can adjust:

  • Return Window: Set the time frame for return requests post-delivery, choosing from options like 14, 30, or 90 days, or specify a custom period.
  • Return Shipping Costs: Decide on handling return shipping fees, offering free shipping, a flat rate fee, or having customers cover it.
  • Restocking Fee: Choose to charge a restocking fee as a percentage of the return amount.
  • Final Sale Items: Specify items exempt from returns, like perishables or custom goods.

Note: Changes to return rules apply to new orders only.

Creating a Written Return and Refund Policy

Post-activation of the Shopify Return and Refund Policy, draft a written policy for a tailored user experience:

  • In your Shopify admin, navigate to Settings, then Policies.
  • In the Written Return and Refund Policy section, input your store’s policy manually or use a default template policy. Modify the template to fit your specific policies.
  • Save your policy once finalized.

Showcasing the Policy on Your Shopify Store

Ensure your Return and Refund Policy is visible and accessible:

  • Feature a link to the policy in the main navigation menu or website header.
  • On the checkout page, include a brief version of your policy to reassure customers, like “Easy returns within 30 days.”
